The Nature Of Evolutinary Change It is an irrefutable fact that we are changing all the time. However, the nature of change is little understood by the average person. This ignorance leads to many misunderstandings and a great deal of unhappiness and suffering, when realy you should be rejoycing. It is preceicely becuase change is so little understood that we fear it and resist it. This the worst thing we can do, because in doing so we are going against universal forces. What it means to go with the flow The ancient wisdom traditions talk a lot about going with the flow. Intellectually it makes sense that the more you resist the more the pain persists. But just why is that so, and, more importantly, how can you make this constant process of change easier? The wiring of our brain has a lot to do with our difficulty to change and evolve. Most of our actions, at least 75% are based on what we did the day before. For the average person 95% of their thoughts are the same as they were the day before. These statistics give a great deal of insight into why we have such a hard time with going with the natural flow of life. The brain is always looking for old precedents in order to perform any task. This is fine and allows us to function automatically and with realitve speed and ease most of the time. Difficulties arise when these old precedents either become encoded with inappropriate emotional codes,(thoughts and feelings), or there is no precedent to match a new task or situation. Since the nature of change is that it is an unknown quantity and can only be assessed by probability at best, we get into trouble. The resulting emotional turmoil creates even more resistance, fear and anxiety. It can lead to dysfunctional behaviour and illness. In other words: as we get more into a chaotic state this chaos feeds on itself until it resolves. The scientist Ilya Prigogine came up with the answer to what is actually happening in our brains. Without going into details here suffice it to say that our brains operate accoridng to a law in thermodynamics, the law of increasing entropy. Chaos builds within a system until it begins to re-organise itself on a higher level and starts functioning again. We can observe this pheomenon throught nature and in everyday existence too:The law of increasing entropu operates in the economy, in the financial markets and, yes you guessed it, in humans. It is how evolutionary grow occurs. We continually evolve on all levels without being consciously aware for the most part Your body renews itself completely within seven years without you noticing it. Some organs only take weeks or a few months to renew themselves. Yet, paradoxically so, most of us are in active denial of the universal law of evolutionary change. In fact we insist on staying as we are and do our utmost to keep our environment static too. Since chaos is an integral part of our nature going against it only achieves one thing: It increases suffering. This attitude is akin to standing right in front of an oncoming train. The end result: You will die, for sure.(At least in human form) Knowledge of course is power. Just by becoming aware of what is happening when your mind goes into chaos can be of help. It can alleviate some of the fear so many of us feel of the unknown.Particularly where early life trauma has created glitches in the energy matrix the need for safety can be in overdrive and sabotage happiness and succes. Standing back, and allowing the process to complete itself is the best way you can help yourself. Relaxation techniques like meditation, learning a practice of increasing your cognitive awareness are tools that will help you through the darkness. EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique is a wonderful and easily learnt tool that can help you to break these annoying mental blocks and clear your mind, thus assisting the renewal process of building new neural pathways. |
